A rug's visual effect depends as much on placement as dimensions. Mark the proposed corners with low-tack tape and walk the route around the furniture. Check door clearance, chair movement and the amount of floor left visible on each side.

For seating areas, aim to connect at least the front legs of the main pieces. Runners need a balanced strip of floor at both sides, while round rugs work best when their shape is echoed by a table, bay or circulation area.

Measure the furniture arrangement, not only the room. Tape out the full rug outline and confirm doors, chairs and walking routes remain clear.

Should the rug sit under furniture?

Usually, yes. Letting the main furniture touch or sit partly on the rug makes the grouping feel intentional and avoids a small floating-rug effect.

Will this size fit a domestic washing machine?
