How Much Should a Rug Cost?

Rug pricing looks arbitrary because two rugs of the same size can differ by a factor of fifty. The variables are construction, fibre and labour, in that order.
What you are paying for
- Hand-knotted — months of skilled labour. Hundreds to many thousands of pounds. A genuine heirloom.
- Hand-tufted — punched by hand with a gun, then glued. Faster, cheaper, and the glue is the weak point.
- Power-woven — the pile is woven into the structure. No adhesive, consistent, and priced by materials and machine time.
- Printed — a pattern printed onto a plain base. The cheapest, and it wears off.
Where size fits in
Price scales with area, not linearly with dimensions. A 200 × 300 cm rug is ten times the area of a 60 × 100 cm — which is why the jump from a mat to a room-sized rug is always steeper than people expect.
A reasonable benchmark
For a power-woven washable rug, £50 for a mat and £185 for a 6 m² room anchor is roughly where the market sits when delivery is included. Below that, check what the backing is made of. Well above it, you are usually paying for fibre — wool — or for hand labour.
The cost nobody prices in
Professional rug cleaning runs to a substantial fraction of the price of a new washable rug, every time. Over five years that is often the largest single line in the cost of owning a rug.
