Choosing a Living Room Rug That Ties the Room Together

The living room rug has a job beyond decoration: it defines the seating area and tells everyone where the room happens.
Size first, always
Get the front legs of the sofa and chairs onto the rug. For most UK living rooms that is 155 × 230 cm as a minimum and 200 × 300 cm where there is space. If the budget only stretches to a smaller rug, you are usually better waiting than buying one that floats.
Pattern versus plain
If the sofa is plain and the walls are plain, the rug is the natural place for pattern. If the sofa is already patterned, keep the rug tonal. The rug is generally the cheaper of the two to replace, which is an argument for putting the risk there.
Colour that survives
Living rooms take drinks, feet and often a dog. Mid-tone, multi-tonal and lightly patterned surfaces hide the most. Pale plain rugs look best on day one and worst on day two hundred — unless you can wash them, which changes the calculation entirely.
Practical points
- Check the rug clears the door swing.
- Leave a consistent margin of floor, roughly 20–30 cm, around the rug.
- Run the rug along the long axis of the room.
- If you have underfloor heating, low pile lets the heat through.
