Both fibres are good at different things. Anyone telling you one is simply better is selling you that one.
Polyester is oleophilic, meaning oil-based stains are harder to shift than water-based ones. It will not survive a hot wash. And it does not have wool's ability to bounce back from a heavy furniture leg standing on it for two years — though at low pile there is less to crush.
Wool's honest weaknesses: it sheds heavily for the first months, it must be professionally cleaned, it is vulnerable to moths and to bleach, and the price puts it out of reach for most rooms in most houses.
If the room has children, pets, a dining table or a door to the garden, washability is worth more than any other property, and polyester wins on the thing you will actually care about. If it is a low-traffic sitting room and you want an object that outlives you, buy wool once.
