A washable rug is only useful if you actually wash it, and most people put it off because they are not sure what will happen. Here is the whole process, including the parts that matter and the parts that do not.
This is the step people skip. A domestic drum is usually 7–9 kg. As a rule of thumb, any rug up to about 2.2 m² goes in comfortably — that covers 60 × 100 cm, 80 × 150 cm, 100 × 200 cm and 120 × 180 cm. The 155 × 230 cm and 200 × 300 cm sizes are too bulky for most home machines; take those to a launderette with a commercial drum, or clean them flat outdoors.
The test is not weight, it is volume. Roll the rug loosely and see whether it sits in the drum with room to tumble. A rug packed in tightly will not get clean, because water and detergent cannot move through it.
Chenille polyester is a synthetic fibre with a twist that gives it its softness. Heat is what relaxes that twist, so hot water is the one genuine risk. Wash at 30°C on a gentle or delicates cycle. The spin can be normal — the rug is dense but it is not delicate in the way a jumper is.
Use your normal liquid detergent at the usual dose. Skip fabric softener entirely. Softener works by depositing a waxy film on fibre, which is fine on a towel you want fluffy and bad on a rug you want to stay non-slip and colour-true. Over a few washes it dulls the pattern and can make the backing feel slick.
No bleach either, including "colour-safe" oxygen bleach on anything with a strong dye. If you have a specific stain, treat that spot before the wash rather than bleaching the whole rug.
Take it out promptly and lay it flat, or hang it over a bannister, airer or washing line. Because the pile is low it dries much faster than a wool rug — usually a few hours indoors, less outside. A tumble dryer is the second genuine risk: the heat will shrink the cotton backing unevenly against the polyester face and the rug will never lie quite flat again.
If it comes out of the machine with a fold pressed into it, lay it flat and the crease relaxes within a day. You can speed that up by putting it face down for an hour first.
For a hallway or kitchen rug, every two or three months. For a living room, twice a year is usually plenty if you vacuum weekly. There is no benefit in washing more than you need to — vacuuming removes the grit that actually wears fibre down, and washing is for what vacuuming cannot lift.
Avoid those three and a washable rug will outlast most non-washable ones, because it actually gets cleaned instead of slowly greying in place.
