How Often Should You Actually Clean a Rug?
Share
Rugs do not wear out from dirt on the surface. They wear out from grit at the base of the pile, which acts like sandpaper every time someone walks across it. That single fact should shape how you clean.
Vacuuming is the important one
Weekly in a living room, twice weekly in a hallway or kitchen. You are removing abrasive grit before it can cut fibre. A rug that is vacuumed regularly and washed twice a year will last considerably longer than one that is washed monthly and rarely vacuumed.
A schedule by room
- Hallway and entryway — vacuum twice weekly, wash every 2–3 months.
- Kitchen — vacuum twice weekly, wash every 2–3 months.
- Living room — vacuum weekly, wash twice a year.
- Bedroom — vacuum weekly, wash twice a year.
- Bathroom — wash monthly; it deals with damp more than dirt.
- Nursery — wash as often as needed, which is the whole reason for a washable rug.
Rotate it
Turn the rug 180° every few months. Sunlight fades one end and traffic wears one path; rotating spreads both so the rug ages evenly instead of developing a visibly tired half.
Shake it out
For the smaller sizes, taking the rug outside and shaking it hard does more in thirty seconds than a slow vacuum pass. It is the fastest way to move grit that has settled to the base.
