Seven Rug Placement Mistakes and How to Fix Them

A well-chosen rug in the wrong position looks worse than an ordinary rug in the right one.

1. Too small

The most common by a distance. If all your furniture sits off the rug, the rug is an island and the room reads as unresolved. Fix: size up, or push the seating in so the front legs land on it.

2. Not centred on anything

A rug should align to something — the seating group, the bed, the table, the length of the hall. Aligned to the room but not to the furniture usually looks accidental.

3. Fighting the room's direction

In a long room, run the rug along the long axis. Turning it across makes the room feel shorter and stubbier.

4. Too close to the wall

Leave a consistent margin of visible floor — around 20–30 cm in a living room, 10–15 cm either side of a hall runner. Wall-to-wall reads as badly fitted carpet.

5. Pattern competing with pattern

A busy rug under a patterned sofa under patterned curtains gives the eye nowhere to rest. Pick one thing to be the pattern. Usually it should be the rug, because it is the cheapest of the three to change.

6. Two rugs in one sightline that nearly match

Either clearly related or clearly different. Two similar-but-not-matching rugs visible at once looks like an error rather than a choice.

7. Never rotating it

One end fades in the window light, one path wears from the door to the sofa. Turn it 180° every few months and it ages evenly.
