A kitchen rug earns its place through comfort rather than looks. Hard floors are punishing to stand on and a rug fixes that.
The shape is usually a runner
80 × 300 cm or 100 × 300 cm down the working side, or a 60 × 100 cm mat at the sink. The extra 20 cm of the wider runner is the difference between walking on it and walking beside it.
Pile height decides everything else
Low pile only. A stool or a chair has to slide over it, a door has to clear it, and a dropped pan has to be wipeable rather than absorbed.
The honest weakness
Polyester is oleophilic — it holds oil. Cooking oil and grease are harder to shift than anything water-based, which is the reverse of how the fibre behaves with wine or juice. The fix is speed: blot, then wash the same day rather than letting it set.
Colour
Mid-tone and patterned. A kitchen floor takes more dropped food than any other in the house and a plain pale runner will show every bit of it between washes.
