Cream & White Rugs: How to Choose One and What to Put With It

We make 60 rugs where cream & white carries the design. This is what that colour does in a room, and how to place it.

What cream & white does to a room

Cream lifts and enlarges. It is the one colour that makes a small or dark room feel bigger, and the pattern on a cream ground reads more clearly than on any other colour because the contrast does the work.

What to put with it

Everything, which is the point. It is particularly good with pale wood, linen, stone and black metal.

Where it goes wrong

It marks. There is no way around that — the honest answer is that a cream rug in a hallway will look grubby within weeks. The difference here is that you can wash it at 30°C, which changes the calculation entirely: the objection to a pale rug has always been the cleaning, not the colour.

Which rooms

Bedrooms and living rooms first. In a kitchen or hallway, choose it only because you intend to wash it regularly — which is a perfectly reasonable plan with these.

A note on how we classify colour

We file a rug under the colour it reads as from across a room, not the colour covering the most surface area. An ivory rug with a strong blue motif is listed under blue, because that is how anyone standing in the doorway would describe it. It means the cream & white collection looks like cream & white rather than like a list of rugs that happen to contain some cream & white.

The practical part

Every one of these is chenille polyester on a woven cotton backing with a non-slip finish, in all ten sizes — eight rectangles from 60 × 100 cm to 200 × 300 cm, plus 160 cm and 200 cm rounds — £50–£185 with delivery to the UK and Europe included. They wash at 30°C in a domestic machine up to 120 × 180 cm.
