A washable low-pile rug is one of the few floor coverings that genuinely reduces the allergen load rather than moving it around.
Textile floors hold dust, dander and mite allergen. Deep pile holds more, and vacuuming a deep pile lifts a proportion of it into the air rather than removing it — which is why hard floors are usually recommended for severe allergy sufferers.
Washing at 30°C physically removes allergen from the fibre and takes it away in the water. Nothing is redistributed. That is a different mechanism from vacuuming, and it is the one that actually lowers the total load in a room.
Mites themselves need 60°C to kill, which a washable rug cannot take. But washing at 30°C removes the great majority of mite allergen — which is the faecal protein, not the mite — and that is what provokes a reaction.
Synthetic fibre holds no lanolin and is not itself an allergen, which matters for the small number of people genuinely sensitive to wool.
