If there is one room that makes the case for a washable rug on its own, it is this one.
The chair rule
The rug must be large enough that a chair stays fully on it when pulled out to sit down. That means 60 cm of rug beyond the table edge on every side as an absolute minimum, and 75 cm is safer. For a six-seat table you are almost always at 200 × 300 cm.
A chair leg dropping off the edge every time someone sits down is the most common dining-rug regret, and it cannot be fixed after the fact.
Pile height
Low. Chairs have to slide, not catch. A medium pile under a dining table means lifting every chair every time.
The spills
Food, wine, sauce and grease, on a schedule. Traditionally the answer was a dark busy rug that hid it, or no rug at all. A rug that goes in the machine at 30°C removes the constraint — it is the difference between protecting a rug and using one.
