Which Rugs Actually Work With a Robot Vacuum

Robot vacuums fail on rugs for three specific and predictable reasons. None of them are about the robot.
Pile height
Most robots climb a threshold of about 15–20 mm. A low-pile rug at 5–8 mm is a non-event; a shaggy rug at 30 mm is a wall. Chenille rugs sit comfortably in the first category — the robot does not so much climb onto it as roll across it.
Edge binding
A thick rolled or fringed edge is a bigger obstacle than the pile itself, and fringe is the classic failure: it gets drawn into the brush roll and the robot stops with an error. A flat woven edge with no fringe gives the robot nothing to catch.
Colour and cliff sensors
This one surprises people. Robot vacuums use downward infrared sensors to detect stairs. Very dark, matte surfaces absorb that infrared, and some robots read a black rug as a drop and refuse to cross it. If you have had a robot mysteriously avoid one rug, this is usually why. Mid-tone and patterned rugs are safest; if you want a near-black rug, check your model or cover the cliff sensors per the manufacturer's guidance.
A practical setup
Low pile, flat edges, no fringe, mid-tone. Vacuum in the same direction as the pile lies where you can. And empty the bin more often than you think — a rug sheds far more grit than a hard floor, which is precisely the point of having one.
