How to Choose a Rug Colour for Your Room

Pick the rug against what is already in the room and cannot easily change, not against what you would like the room to become.

Start with the fixed things

Floor, walls, and the largest piece of furniture. Those three are what the rug has to live with. Cushions and throws are not — they are cheap to change and should follow the rug, not lead it.

Decide warm or cool first

This matters more than the specific colour. Oak, brass, cream and tan are warm; ash, chrome, white and grey are cool. Mixing deliberately works; mixing accidentally reads as a mistake, and a warm grey rug in a cool grey room is the most common version of it.

Contrast against the floor

A rug close in tone to the floor disappears and the room reads flat. Go noticeably lighter or noticeably darker. On a mid-oak floor, either a cream or a deep navy will work where a mid-brown will not.

Then be practical

• Mid-tone and multi-tonal surfaces hide the most.
• Plain pale and plain dark show the most — pale shows soil, dark shows lint and hair.
• If the room has a door to the garden, weight the decision toward pattern.

The washable caveat

Most of the practical advice above exists because cleaning a rug is difficult. If the rug washes at 30°C, you can weight the decision further toward what you actually want to look at.
